I want you to think about a simple question today: What do you want your future self to be grateful you started today? Maybe it’s taking better care of your health. Maybe it’s finally getting serious about your finances. Maybe it’s investing more intentionally in your marriage or your children. Maybe it’s spending time with God every day, serving, joining a LIFE Group, forgiving someone, or taking a step of faith you’ve been putting off.
The truth is, most of the things that make a difference in our lives don’t happen accidentally. Nobody accidentally gets in great shape. Nobody accidentally builds a great marriage. Nobody accidentally becomes financially healthy. And nobody accidentally grows into a mature follower of Jesus. The person you become tomorrow is being shaped by the decisions you make today. Paul understood that. That’s why he often compared the Christian life to running a race. In 1 Corinthians 9:24, he says, “Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win!” I love those last 3 words: Run to win!
There’s a big difference between someone who goes for an occasional jog and an athlete training for a race. One is simply getting some exercise. The other has a finish line in mind. The difference is intentionality. And I wonder how many of us are intentional about our careers, our vacations, our finances, our hobbies, and our plans – but when it comes to our spiritual lives, we’re mostly just hoping everything works out. We drift. We get distracted. We tell ourselves, “Someday I’ll get serious about that.” But “someday” has a way of becoming years.
Here’s something worth remembering: You don’t drift into the life God created you to live. At some point, you have to decide what matters most. You have to decide what is worth your time, your energy, your sacrifice, and your very best. That’s really what Thrive is about. Yes, we’re asking God to expand our reach as a church. We’re making room for more people, more children, more students, and more opportunities to share Jesus. But I also believe God wants to use this season to deepen our roots. Before God does something through us, He often wants to do something in us.
And that’s one of the reasons I’m so excited about our 40 Day Fast beginning this Monday, September 28th. Fasting is intentional. It’s making a deliberate decision to give something up so we can make more room for God. It’s saying, “God, for these 40 days, I want to turn down the volume on something in my life so I can hear Your voice more clearly.” For some of you, that may mean fasting from a particular food or meal. For others, it might be social media, television, entertainment, shopping, or something else that consumes your time and attention. The specific thing you give up isn’t nearly as important as what you do with the space it creates.
Use that time to pray. Spend more time in God’s Word. Keep up with the Thrive Devotional. Pray specifically for our church, for the people God wants us to reach, and for what God wants to do in your heart during this season.
Don’t just give something up. Make room for Someone greater. So as we begin these 40 days together, here’s a great question to ask: “God, what could I set aside for the next 40 days so I can give You more of my attention and more of my heart?” Because ultimately, that brings us back to the bigger question: Am I giving God my best – or simply what’s left? My leftover time. My leftover attention. My leftover energy. My leftover resources. My leftover heart.
This Sunday, we’re going to look at three surprising pictures the Bible gives us for what it looks like to give God our best. And I think they’re going to challenge all of us to look differently at how we’re living the life God has given us. Until then, think about that question: What do you want your future self to be grateful you started today? And maybe even more importantly: What do you want to look back on one day and be grateful you gave to God? Let’s run to win. Healthy things grow. Healthy things THRIVE. I love you Coastal! I love being your Pastor! And I can’t wait to see you Sunday!
Thriving Together!
Pastor Chris

As part of our THRIVE Series, we are asking our entire church to participate in a 40 Day Fast. Beginning THIS Monday, September 28th, choose something to deny yourself physically as we use these 40 days to draw closer to God and THRIVE in our faith.
So, have you signed up for a THRIVE LIFE Group yet? While Groups have just gotten started and some are full, it’s still not too late to join one. Our 2026 Fall Semester LIFE Group Catalog is available online. So, go to our website right now, check out all the different Groups and sign up today.
Our Thrive Daily Devotional began last week. Although most people did pick up a copy of the Devotional, we ran out of the physical copies, but we will have more this Sunday. In the meantime, if you would like to follow along you can do so HERE with a digital download of the devotional.
If for some reason you were unable to make it to one of our THRIVE Campaign Info Meetings, led by Pastor Chris – no worries! We’ve got good news – we recorded it for you! 👉 WATCH THE THRIVE CAMPAIGN INFO MEETING HERE! Grab a cup of coffee, sit down together as a family, and hear the heart, vision, and details behind Thrive. - On Saturday, October 17, CSM is hosting a CSM Serve Day! Coastal is passionate about being the hands and feet of Jesus, and our Student Ministry wants to take that calling seriously. We’re planning a full day of serving opportunities, teaching, worship, and fun! We want students to see that they don’t have to wait until they’re older to be a part of what God is doing at Coastal—they can make a difference right now!
We’re also inviting parents and guardians to join us for the day. We’ll start early Saturday morning, serve together, gather for a time of worship and teaching around midday, serve again in the afternoon, and then wrap up the day with some fun! We will provide food and the event is completely free! Sign up everyone who plans to attend by clicking this link! - Interested in going public with your faith through Baptism?
