I’ve got some new and exciting news to share! Now, I realize that’s a fairly regular occurrence here at Coastal, but this is definitely something new and it’s also pretty big! Coastal now has off-site space to house and operate our Clothing Ministry and Food Pantry for the community (it’s the right side of the building pictured above)! It’s 2500 square feet of commercial space located at 1050 St. Andrews Blvd. that we are leasing long term for an unbelievable price! If you were leaving downtown, coming into West Ashley on St. Andrews Blvd., it’s at “the bend”, where if you continued right you would head to Charlestowne Landing and the Northbridge, and if you went left you would continue on Ashley River Rd., Hwy. 61. Or for those of you who know everything based on restaurant landmarks, it’s in between Hugh Baby’s and Home Team BBQ. It’s a busy stretch of road that literally thousands of people pass every day.
Now let me share how this all came about. On Sunday, January 11th, I preached my annual “Year in Review/Year Ahead” message. In that message, one of the things I talked about was the growth of our Outreach Ministries and how we were running out of space – that we’ve got to find some off-site space to better serve our community and in particular move our Clothing Ministry out of the Laughlin’s home on Johns Island. By the way, it’s people like Don & Diane Houle, the original pioneers who started our Clothing Ministry in their home, and Steve & Karen Laughlin, who picked up the baton, and have seen this Ministry and their Team continue to grow and expand – it’s the faith and servanthood of people like these that have built this Ministry from the ground up. Our Food Pantry Ministry, faithfully led by wonderful servants like Steve & Sue Miller and Linda Polito, are running out of room. Between having a space for people in need to “shop,” a place to store and stage the almost 20 different Blessing Boxes that we supply in the community, the snacks and goodies we give to kids in need at Oakland Elementary School, and a place to stage and store all the Food Rescue we do, we are all crunched for space.
So, the Monday after I preached that message, I got a call from Teresa Spell. She asked some questions about what exactly we were looking for and told me about some available space the Doctor that she works for has that might work. Well, it definitely does! It’s large enough that we can move our Clothing Ministry and our Food Pantry there. We can also stage and launch many of our Tailgates, Food Rescue, and smaller Outreach Projects from there. We’ll also be able to park our Box Trucks there and advertise to the thousands of cars driving by each day. It also frees up much needed space in our building for Coastal Kidz! Simply put, it enables our church to better serve the underserved of our community and to multiply the opportunities to serve and volunteer. It becomes a real “Outpost” into the community for our church (keep that name in mind).
Now, when will all this take place? We don’t have an official date yet for the Grand Opening (yes, there will be a Grand Opening). But as soon as we know, you will know. There is a little bit of remodeling to be done, some equipment to be purchased, and of course, food, supplies, and clothing to be moved. As all of those things begin to get scheduled and we need help, we’ll let everyone know. Like everything else we do, we want this place to bring glory to God and to be a reflection of the Bride of Christ, and in particular, our church. Immediately, we hope it will be open at least two days a week. As we get into a rhythm and have more volunteers, we hope to expand that. If this is something you are excited about and would be interested in serving at during the week, please let us know.
By the way, this is only possible because of the generosity of our church, in particular, our Christmas Offering. Because we exceeded our goal, the funds were readily available to act on this opportunity – so THANK YOU! We can start purchasing paint, flooring, refrigerators, freezers, an ice maker, and various supplies!
So what are we calling this place? Right now, we really like the name, “The Outpost.” An outpost in early pioneering days was a small, often remote settlement or fort set up on the edge of new explored territory. It served as a forward position – a place of protection, supply, and communication for pioneers, soldiers, or traders pushing into new land. They marked presence, expansion, and intention: “We’re here, and help is coming.” In short, an outpost was not the destination—it was a strategic foothold on the frontier, holding ground until more help arrived. I love that! It also makes it easy to expand into other “territories” – the Hollywood Outpost, the North Charleston Outpost. You get the idea!
I love you Coastal! I love being your Pastor! And I love being a part of a church that dreams big dreams, steps out in faith, and accomplishes great things for the Kingdom!
In His Service & Yours!
Pastor Chris
