It’s exciting to see all the OCC Shoeboxes coming in! Almost 700 shoeboxes have already been returned. We had several people ask if we had any more empty shoeboxes. We don’t, however, you don’t have to have the OCC Red & Green shoeboxes – any shoebox will do. Wrap it to make it look festive, print off a label sticker from the OCC website, and select the gender and age of your child. Bring back all shoeboxes between now and Sunday, November 16th to the blue Coastal Box Truck in front of the auditorium.
Parents, how many of you realize that for good or for bad, our children tend to copy or imitate what we do? As they grow up you’ll see all the little tendencies that they pick up from mom or from dad: they way we walk, facial expressions, the things we say or do. And that’s how Paul starts out Ephesians 5. Look at the very first verse, “Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children.” I love how the NLT translates this verse, “Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children.” In other words, being a Christian means that God is our Father and we are His children. And so Paul says, “as a child of God, you need to imitate your Father.”
What do we do with that! I mean, seriously, how do you imitate God? God spoke the universe into existence. I can’t do that! So how do we imitate God? Well Paul is going answer that in the verses that follow. And before we look at the HOW, let me give you the WHY. Here’s the reason: because we participate in who He is. Listen to these two amazing verses from 2 Peter 1:3-4, “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.”
Peter isn’t saying that we become God, but amazingly he is saying that we share in His nature as we become increasingly more like Him. In other words, when you got saved, God did far more than just forgive your sins. He actually came into your life through the Holy Spirit and gave you a new heart, a new nature, and new desires so that you could begin to live a new and different life, a life that escapes the corruption in the world caused by your old, evil desires.
And that’s what Paul is emphasizing here in Ephesians 5. In fact, it’s really a continuation of what he’s just finished saying in chapter 4, remember? Ephesians 4:22-24, “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Put off the old, put on the new. And he went to on say, “This putting off and putting on will get expressed in your speech, in the way you handle your anger, you’ll no longer be lying or stealing or slandering. Instead, you’ll be kind, compassionate, and forgiving, just as in Christ, God forgave you.” And now as chapter 5 opens, it’s as if Paul is saying, “Here’s the point I’m making. I want you to imitate God as His dearly loved children. I want you to become who you are.” Coastal, I love you! I love being your Pastor! And I love imitating our Heavenly Father with you! I can’t wait to see you and your friends over the weekend!
MUCH LOVE,
Pastor Chris
