Friday’s Five – 5-26-17

Dear Coastal,

Our Youth Pastor Ryan really did a great job this past Sunday (even without a live donkey) – and so did Noah, Kristal, and all of our Student Volunteers!  Our Student Ministry had their last WAVES 6.2.SIX of the semester this past Wednesday night, but make sure you check out all their events & activities on their Summer Schedule!

On Sunday, June 11th, we kick off a Summer Sermon Series tradition here at Coastal called, “At the Movies!”  It’s where we use popular or current movies as a hook to talk about Biblical truth!  This year’s series is going to be called, “Chick Flicks & Date Nights” as we talk about relationships.  Each week we’ll be looking at what the Bible has to say about love, sex, dating, marriage, and relationships.  As always, we’ll be pointing people to Jesus!

But why movies?  Well, I think you’d agree that our world still has a love affair with movies.  In fact, I’d go as far to say that people get a lot of what they believe about life, spirituality, and even God (their world view) from the movies they watch and the music they listen to.  Now, obviously I don’t think the world gets it right.  But instead of going to the extremes of condemning the culture or immitating the culture, why not do what Paul did in Acts 17 and use the idols of the day to point people to Jesus and Biblical truth.  That’s what this series is all about.  And in true Coastal style, we’ll have a lot of fun doing it!  In fact, on top of popcorn and give-aways, each week of the series all 1st time guests will receive a FREE MOVIE TICKET to Citadel Mall Theater.  In fact, if you bring a guest with you to church, come over the blue Guest Tent and not only will your guest get a ticket, but you will too!

You might be wondering what I’m going to be preaching the next two weeks before we kick off, “At the Movies!”  Well, before Easter Sunday and “The Real ‘F’ Word” series, we were in a series called, “Joy” from the book of Philippians.  However, when we stopped the series on Easter Sunday, we never made it to the last chapter of Philippians, chapter 4.  So for the next two weeks I’ll be preaching two more messages in the “Joy” series from Philippians chapter 4.  In preparation for the next two weeks, I’d love for you to be reading Philippians 4 during your quiet time.  I realize a lot people will be out of town this Sunday for Memorial Weekend, but if you’re in town, don’t miss this Sunday!  My message will be about finding satisfaction in LIFE!  But if you’re are out of town, don’t forget that you can watch both services live from our website!

Friday’s Five – 5-19-17

Dear Coastal,

I know I must sound like a broken record at times, but WOW!  This past Sunday (Mother’s Day) was AMAZING!  We had 694 in attendance (4th largest attendance ever), a ton of guests, A TON OF BABIES for Baby Dedication, and just a lot of FUN!  But the most important thing that happened was that 2 more people indicated that they gave their lives to Jesus!  Two more lights that we’ll light up on our ONE sign!  Coastal, I hope you know that you are a part of something very special – a move of God!

This Sunday, May 21st, is Youth Sunday!  Our Youth Pastor, Ryan Spell, will be preaching in both services!  And yes, I will be in church, front and center!  A few people just assumed that I would be out of town because Ryan is preaching!  ARE YOU CRAZY?!  I wouldn’t miss it for the world!  I gave Teresa (Ryan’s mom) away at Ricky & Teresa’s wedding. I was there when Ryan was born.  I baptized Ryan.  I baptized his wife Gracie.  I married Ryan & Gracie.  Miss this Sunday?  Not on your life!  I will be smiling from ear to ear, full of joy and excitement!  I hope you will be too!  Noah Lyons, one of our students will be playing the guitar with our Worship Team.  Kristal Blumenstock, another one of our students will be giving our Welcome. And many of our students will be serving & greeting.  Make sure you’re there to offer your support and encouragement!  Plus, as always, God is going to show up in a powerful way and speak to you through Ryan and our Students!

We’ll also be supporting our Student Ministry by having Coastal Day at the Charleston Riverdogs Game!  You can help send our Students to Summer Camp by purchasing tickets for the game on Sunday, May 21st @ 5pm.  Cost of the Ticket is $12 (Tickets are $7 and $5 goes directly to the student).  See Ryan Spell, any of our Students, or Student Ministry Volunteers for tickets.

On another exciting note, our new Associate Pastor, Scott Whitaker is here!  He went ahead and came on up to Charleston to get moved in and Kelly and their daughter Emily will be joining him as soon as school finishes up down in Boca.  Feel free to shoot Scott an email (scottw@coastalcommunitychurch.org) and welcome him to Coastal and Charleston!  Look for him on Sunday!

Dear Coastal,

Don’t forget, this Sunday, May 14th is Mother’s Day! Woohoo! Whatever you do – don’t miss this Sunday at Coastal!  We’ll wrap up our series on Forgiveness by looking at the forgiveness of God expressed through Jesus’ encounter with the woman caught in adultery.  There will be a Baby/Child Dedication in both services – 14 Babies!  Our new ministry “Embrace Grace”, a support group for single pregnant women, will have a booth underneath the ONE sign in the auditorium.  We’ll be giving away a small gift to all the women present, with a few special giveaways at the end of both services. Outside on our campus, Kona Ice and Kieralee’s Sweets will be giving away FREE treats for everyone!

The following Sunday, May 21st, we’re calling Youth Sunday!  Our Youth Pastor, Ryan Spell, will be preaching in both services!  Noah Lyons, one of our students will be playing the guitar with our Worship Team.  Kristal Blumenstock, another one of our students will be giving our Welcome. And many of our students will be serving & greeting.  Make sure you’re there to offer your support and encouragement!  Plus, as always, God is going to show up in a powerful way and speak to you!

On a personal note, I’m also excited about Memorial Weekend, Sunday, May 28th.  My daughter Lydia will be in town from Los Angeles for a long weekend and bringing her boyfriend with her.  So on that Sunday, I’ll be preaching a stand alone message from the Old Testament on the wrath of God (just joking about the message part – wanted to see if you were still reading!).

Friday’s Five – 5-5-17

Dear Coastal,

This Sunday, I’ll be in Week 4 of, “The Real ‘F’ Word” series.  So far we’ve talked about receiving God’s forgiveness and forgiving others.  But for a lot of people, the most difficult part of forgiveness is forgiving yourself.  Don’t miss this Sunday as we talk about dropping the baggage of shame and guilt that a lot of people walk around carrying.

The following Sunday, Mother’s Day, May 14th is going to be AWESOME!  We’ll wrap up this series on Forgiveness by looking again at the forgiveness of God, this time expressed through Jesus to the woman caught in adultery.  It’s going to be quite a powerful day you won’t want to miss.  There will be a Baby/Child Dedication in both services.  Our new ministry “Embrace Grace”, a support group for single mothers, will have a booth underneath the ONE sign in the auditorium.  We’ll be giving away a small gift to all the women present, with a few special giveaways at the end of both services. Outside Kona Ice and Kieralee’s Sweets will be giving away FREE treats for everyone!

There’s another Big Day I want to go ahead and put on your radar.  On Sunday, June 11th, we kick off a Summer Sermon Series tradition here at Coastal – “At the Movies!”  It’s where we use current popular movies as a hook to talk about Biblical truth!  A couple of years ago, I decided to put a little twist on the series and use my own personal favorite movies – Jaws, Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Gladiator, and Rocky.  While those are all great movies, I caught some good hearted flack from the ladies that these were all “Man Movies.”  Well, I heard your whiny voices loud and clear!  I decided to put a little twist on this Summer’s “At the Movies” series calling it, are you ready. . . “Chick Flicks & Date Nights!”  We’ll be using several all time classic “Chick Flick & Date Night” movies to do a relationship series and talk about dating, marriage, and sex.

And as always, during the “At the Movies” series, all of our 1st Time Guests (your friends) get FREE Movie Tickets (and if your friend attends with you, we’ll give you a FREE Movie Ticket as well)! We give away a bunch of gifts!  We’ll have freshly popped popcorn in both services!  On one Friday night during the series, we’re going to have a Friday Night FREE Date Night Movie.  Bring a blanket or your lawn chairs, watch a movie in the gym on our Big Screens with your loved one (FREE childcare provided)!  It’s going to be awesome!  Sometime over the series we’ll also have a FREE Kids Movie Matinee at the Citadel Mall Theater.

This year’s “At the Movies” series kick-off is going to be extra special because later that afternoon we’re going to have a “Barbeque & Baptism” at Folly Beach County Park!  What! What!  The Baptism will be at 4pm with a Barbeque immediately following. We’ve reserved the Pelican Watch Pavillion all day.  We’ll provide the pulled pork BBQ, paper products, and drinks and we’re asking everyone to pitch in and bring sides/dishes/desserts to share!  You can sign up for this Baptism on our website, on your Connect Card, or by responding to this email.
